Port officials say the second deep-water berth will double handling capacity and cut ship waiting times ahead of the busy export season.

Work on a second deep-water berth at Bosaso port has entered its final phase, according to port authority officials, who say the facility could begin handling container vessels before the end of the year.
The expansion is designed to roughly double the port’s container capacity and reduce the time ships spend at anchor waiting for a berth — a recurring complaint from importers during the livestock export season.
Importers say congestion has added days to delivery times for food, fuel and building materials. A port operations manager described the berth as the most important upgrade in a decade.
We expect waiting times to fall significantly once both berths are operating at the same time.
Business groups welcomed the project but called for clearer published tariffs and faster customs processing so that gains at the quayside are not lost on land.
Officials said dredging of the approach channel is complete and that safety certification of the new quay wall is the last major step before commercial operations begin.
